About us

The school which received approval to move forward in September 2016 will primarily meet the needs of Walsall students with the potential to serve the wider Black Country.

The proposed site at St Matthews Quarter will be developed ready to move in to new facilities in the 2019/20 academic year with a temporary site at Millennium House being utilised from Autumn 2018 until the new facility is ready.

Based in Walsall in a purpose built new building the school is part of the Mercian Trust*. We are proud to deliver a school which serves the town of Walsall and neighbouring towns/cities. Working together with you our stakeholders and partners we will create a school which is recognised as a centre of excellence regionally and nationally.

*This will be an Alternative Provision free school in Walsall, proposed by Walsall Studio School, under the auspices of The Mercian Trust.  The Mercian Trust is a new Multi Academy Trust, which was formed in the Spring term of 2018 and is being established by the Queen Mary’s Foundation and The Vine Trust Group, which sees two Ofsted Outstanding Selective Grammar Schools, two Comprehensive Schools and the Studio School working together to offer educational pathways for children in Walsall whatever their abilities or interests.

What is Ladder?

The Ladder campaign is an initiative which encourages businesses of all sizes in the region to work together and help give young people the opportunity to prosper in their organisations. It has been a great success in the Black Country and working together with Mercian Trust to support the new Ladder School is the next natural progression on the journey to ensure our young people have the best possible skills, experience and future employment opportunities.

Ladder for the Black Country will support the new school during the opening phase and once open by:

  • contributing to the curriculum development
  • securing placements and work experience opportunities for learners
  • developing the knowledge and awareness of apprenticeships within the school
  • supporting staff through the provision of high quality CPD

The Local Governing Body for the Ladder Free School (LFS) will be the existing LGB for Walsall Studio School (WSS).

It is expected that some additional members of the LGB will be recruited to meet the specific needs of governance of an Alternative Provision School.

Two of the remaining four vacancies will be filled by parents with appointments scheduled for the autumn of 2018.

The remaining two will meet gaps identified by the skills audit including:

Alternative provision specialism

Education performance management and accountability

The Trust intends to recruit those Governors in the autumn of 2018.
